This utilitarian approach to education is quite culture specific, placing a high priority on factual knowledge and job skills, while allowing little room for aesthetic areas of learning (Hewett, 2000). Paulo Freire in his text Pedagogy of the Oppressed rejects this model for learning, calling it "education for domestication" (Hewett, 2000, p. 111). From the time of its publication in 1970, Freires pedagogical model has had an immense impact on its readers and the field of education. For example, Driedger (2004) describes how Freires model fit with the work that she was undertaking at that time, which was leading training programs for the disabled. As an adult educator in various parts of the world, Driedger has employed Freires ideas in order to stimulate people to talk, to examine their culture and position in society and to use language as an instrument of liberation (Driedger, 2004). Freire proposes that both education and research are "political venues wherein power operates and reproduces itself in the social domain" (Chavez, Turalba and Malik, 2006, p. 1175). An important element in Freires pedagogical approach is his definition of what it means to be a "democratic" instructor, that is someone who encourages and facilitates critical dialogue among learners relative to their social conditions, and in the process, motivates learners to take action and control in their lives (Chavez, Turalba and Malik, 2006).
