of that oppression. These realizations emerge through reflection. They then make a commitment to doing what is necessary to change the world. The second stage happens when the oppressed are no longer oppressed and the oppressors no longer oppress. Freire proposed that it is not only the oppressed who are dehumanized - the oppressors dehumanize themselves. Oppressors are blinded by the process of their oppression; they cannot see how their dominating and manipulating actions are self-destructive. The result is that the oppressed are not free but neither are the oppressors. Neither can see alternative behavior patterns. Freedom for both will come only when the oppressed free themselves. This, of course, is extremely frightening for the oppressed because of the reprisals that will come from their oppressors. Freire makes the point that the oppressed cannot become free by reversing roles and becoming the oppressors. He said that the oppressed need a different mental image, they need to rid their subconscious of the oppressors, the image must be eliminated. Freire calls educational practices factory schooling. Learners are presented with irrelevant curriculum, authoritarian teachers and the imposition of time and space. Freire believes that this type of educational experience makes learners na?ve, silent and obedient. It produces "socially and politically illiterate citizens" (Barkat shah kakar, n.d.). Another important concept in terms of education is Freires discussion of the banking model and the problem posing model. Loosely translated, the banking model refers to the teacher making deposits of information and knowledge in the students mind. In this model, the teacher is the subject and the students are the objects (Kidd, 2001). The banking model favors the oppressors and the problem posing model works in factor of the oppressed.
