account of Paul Reveres ride is that a scholarly historian should take a section of American history which has virtually passed into folklore, and treat it to a serious and
detailed investigation. However, as Fischer points out, the story has become such a popular part of folklore that those who re-tell the tale are no longer sure which parts are
fact and which are not, or indeed, if it ever happened at all. Fischer wishes to make the point that not only did the ride actually take place as a
historical event, it should be seen within the broader context of American history of the time rather than being separated out as a mere childrens fable. Taylor (2003) notes that
Revere does not appear in modern school texts, and sees Fischers work as restoring him to a more balanced place in American history.
Mattern (2003) notes that this is not only a general work which has an
firm academic foundation, it is also a scholarly work which appeals to a much wider readership. Fischer focuses partly on the biographical details of Revere himself and partly on the
battles of Lexington and Concord: the famous midnight ride is therefore presented in the wider context of the American struggle against the British rather than an isolated incident. He looks,
for example, at the reaction by civilians to the British march on Concord and the New England militia uprising, demonstrating the importance of contingency and causality. However, despite the emphasis
on meticulous research and historical accuracy, Fischer presents the events as an exciting narrative rather than a dry, factual text.
