events in the Bible. It recounts Pauls third missionary journey, which began in about year 53 A.D. (BibleStudy.org). The story begins in Chapter 26, however. It was the events in
Chapter 26 that sent Paul on his journey. He had been arrested and appeared before Festus in Caesarea.2 Paul was placed on a ship bound for Rome only because he
insisted on being tried by Caesar because that would save him from being returned to Jerusalem where he may have well been executed.3 Paul would have been set
free had he not insisted being transferred to Caesars district. Paul believed he had been commanded by God to travel to Rome. He had wanted to travel to Rome for
a long time. He even says this in the opening of his letter to the Romans (Montrose Church of Christ). He had not intended to travel to Rome as a
prisoner, though (Montrose Church of Christ). Pauls journey to Rome as a prisoner began in about 60 A.D. from the port of Adramyttium. Other prisoners were also on the ship
under the guidance of a Roman Centurion named Julius.4 It seems that Festus allowed two of Pauls friends to accompany him, Luke and Aristarchus. This was unusual but it may
have been because Paul had already been in prison for two years and Festus knew Paul was innocent of the charges levied against him.5 It was a perilous trip. The
itinerary included stopping at a number of cities along the way. There were high winds and hurricane force winds that hit the ship and its crew and passengers three times,
one of which crashed the ship in Malta. The trip itself must have taken more than year given all the delays along the way, including at least three months in
