They have no dignity, personal hygiene or morals and are basically the scourge of society. Indeed, this social characterization is true for some who either choose or are indoctrinated into a life of prostitution, yet there are all types of people who turn tricks for a living who are nothing like the typical stereotype. The prostitute in Pretty Woman soon realizes this fact about wealthy, status conscious business men who, she has believed all her life, were little more than hollow human shells filled with materialistic souls; once she gets a glimpse of the decent person inside the shallow suit, she too begins to realize an attitude change toward him. The film utilizes a number of social psychological principles befitting the diverse nature of the two leading characters. Looking for a break from his otherwise structured and restricted life, the wealthy business man crosses social boundaries by spending time with a prostitute; inasmuch as he views the entire situation as wholly innocent, he acts out behaviors clearly based upon well worn stereotypes. However, the most pertinent scene where this bias gives way to an attitude change is when he meets her in the hotel lounge for their business dinner date. Failing to notice her as she sits at the bar in appropriate attire, he does a double take when he finally realizes the streetwalker from earlier in the day had been transformed into a well-groomed, attractive woman.
