An example of Paleolithic Art is in a piece dubbed Reindeer where displayed is a representation of a deer; it is depicted in the cave of Font-de-Gaume in France (1926). It is thought that this was created around the year 15,000 B.C. (1926). The representation is quite realistic. The deer is created with some muted tonation and the lines are somewhat vague. Yet, the animal is certainly recognizable. Things would gradually change and the depiction of actual things would vary from new depictions and pattern. Precisely, however, one can quantify the era of Mesolithic and Neolithic Art as being from 20,000 to 2,000 B.C (1926). Some examples provided in a book by Helen Gardner are Stonehedge and Dolmen at Normandy (1926). It was during the mid-period or 10,000 B.C. that real changes were made (1926). Soon, pottery and textile would appear (1926). Clearly, things would become more artistic. Prior to the appearance of such innovations that were used by men there was no need for decoration. One can perhaps say that the cultural changes of the era brought about a new expression in terms of pattern and design. Just as modernity favors certain fabric, colors and patterns, the people of an earlier era wanted to beautify their surroundings. In some sense, art is historically aligned with necessity. The necessary things are made beautiful. Pattern however is found in most design from the architecture of buildings to the blueprint for new automobiles.
