times that patriotism is showing its beautiful colors in the form of the red white and blue; and we are proud to be Americans. WHAT CONSTITUTES PATRIOTISM?
Many of us keep our love of country hidden deep within to the point of it being unacknowledged. It goes without saying, however, that the September 11 terrorist attack
changed Americas people in ways that many cannot put into words without shedding tears. After the initial shock and then the anger, the immediate emotion that was uppermost in
the minds of Americans was love of country. The student will have his or her own ideas how this love of country is expressed for many people, and will
want to explore these ideas thoroughly. For many, the displaying of the stars and stripes are the first and most immediate way we can express how much we love America.
Never before has the flag and the symbols of the United States been so prevalent; stores across the country had a shortage of flags and flag emblems, stickers, or
anything to do with the red, white and blue. This displaying of our nations colors however, is only the most immediate and obvious form of patriotism that we as
Americans were able to do. Patriotism goes much deeper than simply displaying a flag in our front yard, flag stickers on our cars, and t-shirts proclaiming we are proud
