linked to patriotism. That is, people do become emotional when they realize that they are living in a nation which was established through bloodshed. People fought and died for the
freedoms people have today. Thinking back to the bombs bursting in air more than two hundred years ago, and how Francis Scott Key described the scene which is entrenched in
American history, is inspiring. Yet, there are many different aspects of patriotism one might want to pursue. A student writing on the subject of how to preserve patriotism will want
to look at the definitions of patriotism as well as to see how it has been manifested in various parts of the world. Further, he or she will want to
follow its progress through history. Is there more or less patriotism in existence today than when the founding fathers were alive? If there has been a change, why? Finally, with
whatever the existent amount of patriotism there is, how can one preserve it? What is patriotism? The dictionary tells us it is the love of a country. In looking back
through the years, patriotism seems to have been manifested in a variety of ways, from the time of the American Revolution when the tattered flag evoked tears to the times
throughout the ages when the states were involved in international wars and conflict. In the eighties and nineties, yellow ribbons adorned trees whenever American troops were engaged in conflict. There
have been changes as years pass however. The Vietnam War, for example, provoked strong anti-American feelings as exemplified by the music of the day which were accompanied by protest marches
and quick exits via the Canadian border. McConnell said that there was "the sudden onslaught of patriotic agitation that swept the United States in the 1890s"(Bodnar 102). Thus, in the
