most people believe they understand, as well as an idea or a belief that most people feel strongly about. For the most part, as one author notes, "Patriotism is a
love of and loyalty to ones country. A patriot is someone who loves, supports, and is prepared to serve their country" (Lamb; Johnson, 2002). However, in truth it is far
more complex than that in many respects. One can be loyal and patriotic to the ideals a nation was founded on, or they can be patriotic about their current leader.
They can be patriotic about the people, or about warfare. The following paper examines many perspectives and definitions concerning patriotism. Patriotism The origins of the word
come from a Greek word that means fatherland (Lamb; Johnson, 2002). "For most of history, love of fatherland or homeland was an attachment to the physical features of the land.
But that notion changed in the eighteenth century, when the ideals of democracy, socialism, and communism strongly emerged into political thought" (Lamb; Johnson, 2002). At this point, although the notion
of patriotism still involved the land, it also included culture, traditions, history and the welfare of a nation or community (Lamb; Johnson, 2002).
