throughout history. They stood, for the most part, on opposite sides of the fence as one desired their own power and the other were all but powerless common people. However,
those common people, as is also sometimes the case in history, took some of their own power. In the process these two groups were clearly divided in many ways. The
following paper examines the division of these two groups according to Livys The Early History of Rome. The paper focuses on how it was ultimately the oppression of the plebeians,
and created by the patricians, that led to the division. Patricians and Plebeians According to Livys work it appears as though there were many issues involving the division
of these two groups and the primary issue was that of power which resulted in oppression and disregard for the plebeians. Issues were heavily related to the foundation wherein the
plebeians had no power for the patricians, though claiming a republic, only served themselves, the nobles, and no other people. This is evident in the following excerpt: "The
news of Traquins death came as a profound relief to all classes of society in Rome; it soon proved, however, a mixed blessing, for the patricians welcomed it far too
much as an opportunity for self-indulgence at the expense of the masses, who had hitherto, as a matter of policy, been treated with every consideration. Now that the menace of
Tarquin was removed, they began to feel the weight of oppression" (Livy p. 132). This illustrates that the simple reality of power and oppression was at the heart of
the division between the two. It indicates that the patricians were very much a power that now had the freedom to truly take advantage of the common people now that
