or not he upheld such patriarchal beliefs. This is quite understandably the case due to the fact that Europe was firmly imbedded in its patriarchal society. In Shakespeares "Othello" and
"Macbeth" we are given many perspectives of a patriarchal society as the stories revolve around men, are titled after men, and only present us with women as thickeners to the
plot. In the following paper we examine the two stories individually, examining whether they seem to present us with a support of the patriarchal society or whether they seem to
critique the existence of the patriarchal society. Bearing in mind that Shakespeare was known to use sarcastic humor and irony in his plays we can perhaps more generally assume that
he was critiquing the existence of the patriarchal society rather than colluding the existence of patriarchy. Othello "In the later tragedy, Othello, it can also be argued that
the tragedy occurs from adherence to patriarchal rules and stereotypes. Gayle Greene summarizes this position in her claim that the tragedy of Othello stems from mens misunderstandings of women and
womens inability to protect themselves from societys conception of them" (Lewis shakespeare_women.html). This becomes incredibly evident when we understand how Desdemona is so heavily reliant on the patriarchal system. She
is passive and obedient, indicating that she easily goes along with the society, though she is wronged by it as well: "After Othello in his jealousy has struck Desdemona and
spoken harshly to her, she tells Iago, I am a child to chiding. Protected by a system which makes women the weaker, dependent sex, Desdemona is unequipped to deal with
