Washington states that hospitals policy regarding patient possessions and asks that patients not bring "valuable items," such as jewelry, during their stay and that patients should send all valuables
home with family members or friends and also adds the disclaimer in bold italics that the center "does not accept responsibility for lost or misplaced items" (St. Marys Medical Center,
2007). As this notice suggests, this is a common policy for hospitals. However, the question remains as to the appropriateness of the nurses actions. As this is a religious item,
the symbolism that it holds for the patient should be considered within the framework of cultural competency. Census figures indicate that the population of the United States is becoming
increasingly diverse on an annual basis. This demographic fact presents a challenge to healthcare practitioners as providing care that is compatible with a patients culture, including health and religious beliefs,
has been shown in empirical research to significantly affect the likelihood of achieving a positive patient outcome. Purnell defines culture as pertaining to the "totality of socially transmitted behavioral patterns,
arts, beliefs, values, customs, lifeways and all other products of human work and thought..." (Purnell, 2005, p. 7). It is the ethical responsibility of healthcare providers to evaluate the beliefs
