people listen to sermons? Dykstra suggested it was for the same reason they seek pastoral counseling - they have a deep desire for transformation (Taylor, 2002). They want to change
or they want something in their life to change. Sermons can provide the insight they need to make those changes. Both pastoral counseling and sermons intend to act as catalysts
for change. They intend to inspire people to adopt different behaviors, attitudes and/or beliefs or to accept what is happening. Both use Scripture to bring insight and growth to their
audiences. Capps (1980) reported: "counseling and preaching can reflect common understanding of the theory and practice of ministry. The differences between them can be bridged for an integrated ministry. Capps
(1980) suggests there are four stages that describe the process of both pastoral counseling and preaching sermons: first, a problem is identified; second, the problem is reconstructed for clarification; third,
the problem is diagnosed; and fourth, treatment and intervention are implemented. We may not agree that sermons or that all pastoral counseling processes are based on the identification of a
problem but the process for both still remain very much the same. We could substitute the word problem for topic or concern in the stages. The similarities between the two
remain - the concern or issue is determined and that issue may be categorized or dissected to assure clarity. The issue must be interpreted to provide counseling or to deliver
a sermon. Oglesby (1980) suggests that "both the sermon and the counseling conversation are aimed primarily at re-establishing broken relationships." There are always relationships involved in counseling sessions. People dont
