for the equality and intelligence of women. Wollstonecrafts A Vindication of the Rights of Women is essentially an outline that details many aspects of society and how women should be
seeking to live a noble and intelligent life, as men did during her time. It is not a work that illustrates how women are naturally emotional, but rather seems to
argue that women should stop being so emotional. With that in mind the following paper examines the position of passion in Wollstonecrafts Vindication. Passion and Mary Wollstonecrafts A
Vindication of the Rights of Women At one point in Wollstonecrafts work she notes how men have long written books which, according to Wollstonecraft, present women as "alluring mistresses" rather
"than affectionate wives and rational mothers; and the understanding of the sex has been so bubbled by this specious homage, that the civilized women of the present century, with a
few exceptions, are only anxious to inspire love, when they ought to cherish a nobler ambition, and by their abilities and virtues exact respect" (Wollstonecraft). In light of this one
can well see that she pushed passion aside and focused on urging women, and men, to see women as intelligent creatures rather than ever seeing them as creatures of passion.
She further notes, for example, how "The sensualist, indeed, has been the most dangerous of tyrants, and women have been duped by their lovers, as princes by their ministers, whilst
dreaming that they reigned over them" (Wollstonevraft). While this is clearly a statement that could apply to men as well, she is clearly stating that women are more prone to
being a victim of their passions and thus should not be passionate as it applies to romance and sexual interest. She further claims that she is urging the reader
