Research has indicated that were students work in part time jobs while they are in education, both during the compulsory years and in further or higher education, there is the
potential for there to be a direct impact in the outcomes of that education. Vicker (et al, 2003) found that where high school students worked 10 hours a week or
more were less likely to complete year 12 than those who either did not work, or worked less than 10 hours a week. However, Robinson (1999) did not find the
same results; the finding in this research was no correlation between completing year 12 and whether or not a student competed this level of their education. There are also
conflicting reports regarding other aspect of part time employment for students, some research indicates a motivation primarily driven by financial factors, including reduction in student financing and rising educational
costs, (Curtis and Williams, 2002), while other will take paid employment for a multitude of reason, with motivators such as future employment prospects being a dominant influence (Robinson, 1999).
The research concerning part time work in students, looking at the motivation for that work and the outcomes is rather fragmented and in some cases there is apparent disagreement. If
education is seen as a highly important influence in a students life any aspects that may impact on the outcome of that education needs to be considered, and the way
