probation, which means they are free to continue their life in the community. They must, however, report to regular meetings with their probation officer (Carlie, 2002). There may be conditions
associated with probation, such as the person cannot leave the city or state or they cannot associate with certain types of people like other criminals (Carlie, 2002). The specific conditions
will be dependent upon the crime. A criminal may be granted parole after they have been sentenced to serve time in jail or prison. In other words, it is an
early release from prison (Carlie, 2002). Like those on probation, this convicted criminal must obey certain conditions, one of which will be regular meetings with their parole office (Carlie, 2002).
Unlike probation, parole is actually an early release from the individuals prison term. Persons may be released from prison early based on an accumulation of days the person is good,
i.e., good time (Carlie, 2002). Another phrase most people are more familiar with is good behavior, i.e., released on parole early because of good behavior. Good Time
The laws regarding good time differ from state to state. The law may not award an equal number of days off for days prisoners behaved. Carlie (2002) commented that it
is common in some prison systems to grant two or three days of good time for each day the prison behaves himself or herself. For example, a prisoner sentenced to
a two year term might be paroled in a matter of months if the prison awarded two days early release for each day of good behavior. This does not mean
