An 8 page research paper that discusses the decade-long affair between Charles Stewart Parnell and Kitty O'Shea, which brought about the demise of Parnell's political career. In 1890, Great Britain was rocked by a scandal of monumental proportions. Charles Stewart Parnell, a member of Parliament and volatile spokesman in favor of Irish Home Rule, was named as the cause of a divorce by a fellow MP, Captain William O'Shea. The proceedings brought to light the fact that Parnell has been carrying on an affair with Mrs. O'Shea for the last decade. The Victorian world was shocked. Parnell's career went into decline and Ireland lost the perspective for Home Rule that had recently seemed so close. However, examination of their affair and its political ramifications shows that the shocking quality of scandal was not due to what would be judged a immoral conduct today, but rather was a result of the Victorian attitudes towards divorce. today, but rather was a result of the Victorian attitudes towards divorce. Charles Stewart Parnell came to political prominence in the 1880s during a conflict between Irish tenant farmers
and their English landlords (Parnell was smeared, 2000). His rise to prominence was quite extraordinary and something of a paradox as he was a Protestant landlord who became the leader
of a Catholic people over a fight against landlordism (Hurst, 1968). As Thomas Sherlock said of Parnell and his family in his 1881 biography, the Parnells were "originally an English
family" and that this particular Irish leader sprang from an "alien race" (1881, p. 4). Parnell was somewhat ineffectual in Parliament at the onset of his career, but he
learned quickly and by 1877, he had developed a reputation that earned him the respect of the Irish in Great Britain, so much so that they accepted him as the
head of their organization (Lyons, 1960). Encouraged by Parnell, members of the Irish Land League refused to harvest the potato crop on land belonging to Captain Boycott and the
word "boycott" entered the English language (Parnell was smeared, 2000). The protests that followed forced Prime Minister William Gladstones Liberal government to pass the Land Act of 1881, which gave
