but think about Paris and New York. These are two of the most powerful cities in terms of leading artistic movements and influencing the world or art through architecture, painting
and photography. The following paper examines the impact these two cities had on these fields of art during the 19th and 20th centuries. Paris and New York Paris
and New York both possessed their own unique style of art in the 19th century for the most part. America was known for its natural landscapes while France was perhaps
more well known for its constant exploration of various approaches to art. In Paris we see that much of the art of the middle of the 19th century involved Gustave
Courbet. "Courbets paintings of peasants, such as Funeral at Ornans (1850; Louvre), caused a scandal at that time, but his powerful depiction of nature found other exponents in Jean Francois
Millet and Honore Daumier" (French Art and Architecture: The 19th Century, 2004). This was essentially the movement known as realism, which was also taking place in the United States.
This new approach to art focused on the art itself rather than the subject matter. And, as one critic notes, "This attitude was a necessary precondition for the emergence of
impressionism, a movement in painting that concentrated on the effects of light and color" This was a movement that originated in Paris and influenced many other artists around the world
in a way that perhaps no other approach to painting had done at that point. Interestingly enough, at about this same time Paris was the home to the discovery
