Others, however, claim that such parents are doing nothing more than conducting open child abuse in neglecting to provide medical care for children. It is a very delicate subject and one that perhaps, cannot be solved. In the following paper we examine both sides of the issue, with an argument that leads more towards parents not having the right to deny medical treatment if a situation is life threatening. The information is presented as a tutorial to assist the student in better developing their own argument for or against such rights. Do Parents Have the Right? As mentioned, many people argue that they have the right to deny their children medical treatment if such medical treatment goes against their religion. In better understanding this perspective we present a few cases wherein the people were refusing such treatment. In the first case we find a 16 year old girl who is insisting she not have treatment, something her parents were apparently arguing over. "The week-long struggle to save the life of the Jehovahs Witness girl has broken the hearts of child welfare officials and doctors -- and divided even her mother and father over whether she should get blood transfusions to treat her leukemia. Doctors say that without the treatment, the girl wont live" (Pierson, 2002; p. 3). The girls lawyer was fighting to allow her the right to refuse, despite any wishes of her parents.
