argues that parenting is the foundation of societal cohesion. Discussion The fact that the family is considered the basic "building block of society is found in the fact that the
United Nations declared 1994 to be "The Year of the Family" (David and Chan, 2004). Family is the "most important link that binds people together within society" (David and Chan,
2004). But families today are threatened by "societal, cultural and economic impacts that appear in some societies to disrupt or dissolve it" (David and Chan, 2004). The reason for this
disruptions, the authors argue, is "the rise in individualist ideologies" (David and Chan, 2004). The United States is such a society, where people put a great deal of emphasis on
individual rights and freedoms, and less on strengthening familial ties. In fact, today families are spread all over the country, if not the world, loosening societal cohesion. As the desire
to get married declines, so does the importance of the family, since the two go together: "Throughout the world, families form around marriage, a legally sanctioned relationship involving economic cooperation,
sexual activity and child-bearing that people expect to be enduring" (David and Chan, 2004). The family "links its members with members of other different social institutions" through marriage; the family
also protects its members (David and Chan, 2004). Among the traditional functions of marriage are childbearing; "social placement of the child, socialization and social control" (David and Chan, 2004).
Children also learn about their culture, as well as moral and religious values, through their family (David and Chan, 2004). It goes without saying that the people who provide these
examples for their children are their parents; the parents thus are the agents who provide social cohesion. David and Chan argue further that transmitting moral values and "feelings of identity"
