People learn from their parents, who in turn learned from their parents, and the influence is powerful even if it goes largely unnoticed. The following paper examines the influence of this particular writers parents and grandparents on their identity in many areas. Parents and Grandparents Influence on Identity First off I never really knew 3 out of my 4 grandparents. And, the one grandparent I did know, my mothers mother, I did not know well because she lived quite a distance away. Yet, I was always intrigued, even as a child, about my ancestry and so have always felt like who my ancestors were was very important to me, and to who I was. I listened to stories and developed parts of my identity concerning my grandparents even though I did not know them. This may well have created a need to seek out information for, as one author indicates, "Grandparents have a strong impact on their grandchildrens sense of identity. When an individual does not have intergenerational family relationships, he or she may lack a cultural and historical sense of self" (Olsen; Taylor; Taylor, 2001). And so I apparently sought that information out to help identify myself. For example, my mothers father was a commercial artist and she would often claim that she did not ever want to marry a man with such "artistic" inclinations that led him to travel. Yet she was also a woman who loved the theater and music and was, as such, something of an artistic personality herself. And, she married my father, a WWII fighter pilot, which seems a bit intriguing as fighter pilots are likely just as unstable, if not more so, than artists. The fact that ...
