in dramatic moments, but its real value emerges only when it has been consistent over time. My own parents provided positive influence for
me throughout the course of my life so far. It remains important now, but it probably was even more valuable during the early years of my development. It
has been a fact of our family for longer than I have been alive, and it continues to provide a ready touchstone guiding my choices and decisions. Examples of Parents
Positive Influence Setting a Good Example All parents provide a model of adult behavior that their children seek to emulate as adults.
Negative influence creeps in when it is not invited; the effects of alcoholism or abuse readily span generations until someone determines that the chain of progress will stop with them.
Positive influence can operate in the same manner, but it has an added benefit of providing the ability to consciously duplicate patterns and traditions that bring joy to life
rather than steal it away. My parents required respectful exchanges in our family. They demanded that children show them respect, but they
also reciprocated to show us respect too. Certainly my parents argued occasionally, but even their arguments provided a good example for their children. They taught their children the
