2006). Some examples of childhood chronic illnesses include: diabetes, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, spina bifida, congenital heart problems and asthma, the most common (Laundy and Boujaoude, 2006). The
United States Maternal and Child Health Bureau reports about 18 million children have a chronic illness (Coffey, 2006). Some estimate that between 15 and 18 percent of American children suffer
from a chronic condition (Laundy and Boujaoude, 2006). Others estimate as many as 31 percent of American children experience a chronic illness that interferes with normal childhood activities (Churchill, n.d.).
Whichever proportion is more accurate, one thing is true: "Increasing numbers of children are diagnosed with chronic illnesses each year" (Coffey, 2006, p. 51). The question is: How do parents
cope when they have a child with a chronic illness? Method This will be a qualitative descriptive study. A literature review will be conducted to obtain information on how
parents cope when they have a school-age child with chronic illness. Specifically, a comprehensive Online search will be conducted. Both general and academic databases will be used, such as Elibrary,
Infotrac, and Google. Sources from general databases will be used only if they originate from a reputable or professional organization. Articles from 1980 through the present will be reviewed.
The search will be continued until the investigator believes an adequate volume of information has been collected. This typically happens when articles start repeating each other and/or metaanalyses and/or metasyntheses
