in the Supermarket can trigger a slap on the wrist for not even the most challenging two year old, and people will stare. It is a knowing stare that suggests
the mother is not doing enough to tame the antics of her little one. The mother may be at her wits end. The terrible twos are quite challenging in fact,
but what is the proper way to handle tantrums and things that every child around the age of two or three dish out? And while many children are a handful
through nursery school, Kindergarten and beyond, the three year old is supposed to be somewhat tame. Rabago-Mussi (2001) reports that after the turbulent twos, the three year old
is a delight. In fact, they tend to be obedient, and are pleased with their own sudden sense of control (2001). Certainly, they begin to notice that what they do
matters, and they begin to gain more control for the rewards that come with positive reinforcement. But while many three year olds are out of diapers, and can walk and
talk, they retain old habits; many suck their thumbs, sleep with teddy bears and exhibit some other holdover of baby behavior (Bumgarner, 1982). Many continue to exhibit tantrums as well.
