often - if not unwittingly - ignoring the infants innate need for comforting and understanding. Leaving a baby to cry all day in his or her crib without attempting
to ascertain what the problem is only teaches the child that his or her needs are not worthy of being addressed. Wilson (2001) notes how during the attachment cycles
initial phase, "crying is the dominant signaling behavior. The cry of the infant signals the caregiver to provide relief for the child" (Wilson, 2001, p. 37). Moreover, a
mother is supposed to tend to the emotional and physical pain inherent to infancy, ultimately establishing the all-important bond that sets the stage for healthy emotional development. Teenagers are
not the only neglectful parents, which can also be displayed by those who are emotionally absent, substance abusers or mentally unstable, who are all wholly incapable of providing the fundamental
foundation for a healthy life. "Babies learn about their environment through their five senses: touch, sight, hearing, taste, and smell. When parents provide the kind of nurturing and
care the baby needs, the five senses are positively stimulated" (Smith, no date). Parents who are abusive represent yet another population of unattached children whose only defense against such
inhumane treatment is to become antisocial themselves. Abusive parents are anything but comforting and supportive; as such, the process of bonding is all but absent from the equation, which
