My parents would have handled the situation in a similar manner. Bigner (2006) points out that "Communicating too many donts" concerning toddler behavior is counterproductive, as are strategies that involve getting into a power struggle with a toddler (p. 140). Furthermore, Bigner indicates that it is not providing structure when parents try to "create a compliant child in order to maintain image of self as a good parent" (p. 140). A toddler is no being disobedient when he or she reaches for objects, but is merely exploring the world. A parent controls this exploration, making some things available, putting others off-limits, and, thereby, structures the environment to meet the childs needs. It might be difficult to follow through on "child-proofing" a home if one parent sees this as capitulation. However, even a cursory reading of parenting texts, such as the one by Bigner would show that discipline should be developmentally appropriate and that getting into a power struggle with a toddler is not only counterproductive, but detrimental to the childs urge to explore and learn. 2. A four-year-old continues to jump on the sofa, even though the child has been told that this behavior is not allowed. My first reaction would be to make sure that the child realizes the reasons for making this behavior is off-limits, that is, it wears out the sofa; gets it dirty.
