is impossible and that if it were possible parents and community members would only oppose progressive reforms" (200). There are problems when it comes to involving parents in the classroom,
but some educators feel that parents are the ones to turn things around and that if a good relationship is forged between parent and teacher, education will improve. Nussbaum refers
to "the role of the parent culture" as it pertains to Greek tradition (170). Indeed, there is a role for parents in education and it is a large one.
On some level, what goes on in the home is important. Stories of children unprepared and having to go home to alcoholic parents is legendary. They may arrive to school
late, disheveled and disorganized. Some children however may be prefect students as they try to make up for their shortcomings at home in school. The parent-child relationship in the home
is associated with cultural conditions and the social structure (Friere, Macedo and Ramos 154). For example, if the climate is dominating and rigid, there will be a climate of oppression
(Friere, Macedo and Ramos 154). This can hurt progress at school. When parents are encouraged to help in the classroom, or in the school, it provides an opportunity for the
teacher to get a better idea of how their students lives are unfolding in general. This knowledge can help teachers to better understand problems that the students may have. In
