Definition of parental involvement While we can agree that parental involvement motivates students of all types to improve their learning techniques and skills, we may not always agree what constitutes parental involvement. According to Jesse (1997), this involvement can range from supportive to active participation, the best for the student and the parent is a combination of the two, however this may be difficult when the family consists of only one parent and the child, or when both parents work outside of the home. In order to see how this really works in the most positive manner, it may be necessary to consider the following issues: How does the school or the childs teacher define parental involvement - does this differ from what the parent believes is parental involvement? Can positive examples of parental involvement concerning motivational decisions be illustrated for parents who may want to be involved but are not sure how this is done? Do structural barriers exist? (economic, cultural, or racial) Are there other concerned adults who may substitute, or add to the parental role. Changing nature of parental involvement Anyone who has been around children for more than a day, knows of their ability to move rapidly, as though the world is a blissful place made only for them. Such a childlike attitude may place them in dangers for which they are unprepared.
