education and over all development of their childrens obtaining of academic and social skills is an objective for which both schools administrator and individual educators strive. The school district
wants to implement a program that will not only involve parents with our elementary school, but also the community as a whole. This paper specifically addresses the role that social
studies teachers can play in achieving this objective. The work of Barbara Knighton, a first-grade teacher, provides an excellent example to emulate in regards to parental involvement. Knightons goal
is to create a learning community, which is based upon cultural universals, such as the need of all peoples for shelter, food, clothing and family, as its foundation (Alleman, Knighton
and Brophy, 2007). She begins each school year by sending a letter to the families of the children in her class, which offers the general information that parents will need
about the first day of class, as well as information designed to aid each child in having a successful year (Alleman, Knighton and Brophy, 2007). This letter conveys the understanding
that each child is appreciated for their individual identity, which includes their cultural background. By focusing on cultural universals, Knighton places her introduction to social studies in a firm
