In a 1999 article published in the "Journal of the Society of Pediatric Nurses" titled "Parent behavior and child distress during urethral catherization" authors Charmaine
Kleiber and Ann Marie McCarthy investigate the interaction that occurs between parents and children when the child is undergoing urethral catherization. The researchers decided to investigate this question knowing
that the findings would be useful in allowing medical professionals to delineate the natural parental behaviors that are productive in aiding the child in coping with this sometimes stressful procedure.
The hope, of course, was that the findings of this study could be applied in similar procedures to lessen the degree of stress a child experiences when confronted with
a painful medical process. The answer to the question these researchers ask could, in fact, be considered critical in that patient welfare could feasibly be optimized with appropriate parental
interaction. As Kleiber and McCarthy (1999, 53) emphasize: "implementation of developmentally appropriate nursing interventions
to decrease child distress is imperative" Pain is a very important consideration in nursing.
Indeed, some four thousand of so documents were published annually about pain in the 1990s (Larsen, 2000). Harrison, Evans, Johnston, and Loughnan (2002) state that the purpose of pain
assessment is to ultimately provide a means of reducing pain. The observations made in Kleiber and McCarthys (1999) study could feasibly be used to educate parents in the most
