After some thought, one might reconsider and suggest that a parent is responsible for their childs behavior no matter where the child is. The arguments on both side of this issue are valid. This essay offers some of the arguments on both sides of the issue, then offers a third alternative that suggests both are really responsible and neither should pass on this responsibility to the other. The Controversy Parents or Teachers? Who is responsible for the childs motivation and learning when the child is in the classroom? Teachers are in control of the classroom environment. They have the power to create an environment in which students feel nurtured, motivated, and excited about learning. Furthermore, they are trained in a variety of motivational techniques. They know what kinds of things to do that will help students want to learn. On the other hand, parents set the rules at home. They have the child from birth and create an environment in which infants, toddlers and preschool children develop attitudes and values. Once the child enters the school system, the parent is still creating an environment in which the child continues to develop values and attitudes. Thus, the parent is really responsible because they have taught the child since birth. Finally, parents have absolutely no training in how to motivate children to learn. Elementary school teachers have children for approximately six hours a day. There is only so much they can do in that amount of time. Secondary school teachers usually have each student for 45 to 55 minutes each day. They have even less time to try to develop attitudes and motivation toward learning.
