their childrens education, both at home and at school, their children are not only more successful academically, but they stay in school longer, and--frequently--the schools themselves benefit from this involvement
(Jordan and Rodriguez, 2004). Studies indicate that when family and communities are involved with schools, it offers a definitive and positive benefit. Meta-analyses of sixteen studies shows that a common
thread that runes this research is that how school staff perceive and treat parents --either as "assets to the process of raising student achievement or as liabilities" -- was the
factor that most significant in determining the relationship between communities and schools (Jordan and Rodriguez, 2004, p. 3). For example, effective communication between teachers and parents can greatly influence
how homework is completed or if it is completed. In a study of homework practices of middle school students, it was fond that parents helped their children with their
homework an average of between 1 and 3 times per week, and it was reported that parents checked their childrens homework an average of 4 times per week (Van
Voorhis, 2004). On the other hand, student reported that their teachers urged them to request aid from their parents no more than once or twice a month and to do
so such tasks as "checking homework, studying for tests, or working on projects" (Van Voorhis, 2004, p. 205). As this research shows, whether or not their efforts are guided by
