story she battles against her mother, only to find that there was some truth to her own identity in her mothers insistence. The following paper examines this theme of parent/child as it involved the development of Tans identity. Amy Tan Amy Tans mother was from China and she envisioned that America was a place where anything was possible and anyone could achieve greatness and fame if they tried. She did not accept that not everyone would want to achieve greatness or fame, but yet she believed that her daughter could be really good at something if she only tried and was obedient. The daughter, however, was rebellious for in listening to her mother she begins to lose sight of her own identity, sure she was a prodigy, but then suddenly looks in the mirror and notes the following: "And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy side of me-because I had never seen that face before....The girl staring back at me was angry, powerful. This girl and I were the same....I wont be what Im not" (Tan). From that point on she made a diligent effort to not do anything her mother told her in terms of trying to become some sort of prodigy. She took the piano lessons and began, at the recital, to feel some powerful connection with the music, and then failed. She would never try it again, and in accepting that she may have loved the piano and had a natural talent for it she was denying herself, denying her identity. While trying to make sure her mother did not turn her into something she was not, she bypassed what she was in those early years. She was determined that her mother was wrong, that she would do whatever it took ...
