has not adapted mentally to this new life and has suffered from bouts of depression and anger. He is continuing with his education, but finds university life to be a
struggle. Waynes parents divorced roughly a decade ago and he sees his father as weak and embittered. He has two older brothers, but it has been Wayne that his mother
has relied on for help. He is seeking help because he has had recurrent thoughts of suicide and because he realizes that he needs guidance in dealing with his anger
and depression and in finding new meaning in his life. The first factor to be addressed should be Waynes potential for suicide. According to the American Journal of Psychiatry,
the assessment of a suicidal patient is an "ongoing process that comprises many interconnected elements" (Assessment of patients, 2003, p. 7). A psychiatric evaluation should provide data on the
"patients history, current circumstances, and mental state" and should include direct questioning as to suicidal thinking (Assessment of patients, 2003, p. 7). Waynes willingness to seek help suggests that he
will be cooperative and open in providing necessary information for a complete evaluation. Inquiry should be made as to any past suicide attempts and whether or not any sort of
drug abuse is a problem since intoxication can be a facilitating factor in impulsive suicide attempts (Assessment of patients, 2003). The evaluation should address "ambivalence toward living, visualization of death,
degree of premeditation, persistence of suicidal ideation, and reaction to the attempt" (Assessment of patients, 2003, p. 7). The above case scenario suggests that suicide has only briefly crossed Waynes
