often a sense of anxiety and agitation that will accompany the more general schizophrenic symptoms (Munro, 1999). In certain cases, suicide will result (Munro, 1999). Begley, Underwood, Springen & Gesalman
(2002) explain: "In paranoid schizophrenia, the patient becomes convinced of beliefs at odds with reality, hears voices that arent there or sees images that exist nowhere but in his mind"
(p.62). One can imagine that sometimes the delusions are rather frightening. In general, schizophrenia is a mysterious disease that was first acknowledged by Emil Kraepelin during the 1890s (Begley, Underwood,
Springen & Gesalman, 2002). For the schizophrenic, the voices and visions seem to be authentic (Begley, Underwood, Springen & Gesalman, 2002). Hence, they are perceived to be reality. While etiology
for this condition is unclear, researchers do say that it is probably caused by "neurons that take a wrong nun during fetal development" (Begley, Underwood, Springen & Gesalman, 2002,
p.62). Since the discovery of this disease, from all the studies conducted thus far, it seems that the consensus is that about one percent of the population is afflicted with
some form of schizophrenia (Begley, Underwood, Springen & Gesalman, 2002). There is a genetic component as well, but in twin studies, it is not the case that there is a
greater likelihood of both twins being afflicted with schizophrenia; often, one twin has it but the other does not (Begley, Underwood, Springen & Gesalman, 2002). This perhaps does support the
idea that there is a problem in the developing fetus as for identical twins, the egg splits early in the process. Thus, while identical twins may have the same genes,
there are changes during development. Diagnosis will depend upon the types of symptoms present as well as their severity. Schizophrenia is diagnosed when a patient has at least two
