The student investigating the wide variation in philosophical opinion which exist in relation to the importance of the individual in a collective society will undoubtedly eventually encounter Richard Rorty. Rorty provides a unique philosophical perspective on the importance of culture and social solidarity. Influenced himself greatly by philosopher John Dewey, Rorty critiques foundationalist, metaphysical approaches to philosophy insisting that philosophical reflection in an attempt to provide "alternative" answers to age-old questions simply are ineffective, that instead one should recognize ones own importance in the grand scheme of things and: "put aside [undue philosophical reflection]" as it is only "an escape from freedom into the atemporal", and "an attempt to attain an end beyond [human] life" (Rorty(a) 87). As is obvious, Rorty has been heavily influenced by the world of John Dewey. Indeed, Rorty himself attributes much of his philosophy to the influence of Dewey. Each of these men, in fact, use insight from Nietzsche, Freud, Wittgenstein, and a gamut of other philosophers to add to our understanding of language, democracy, the individual (self), within both the public and private spheres. Rorty notes, for example, that Theodore Adorno recognizes that there are many different types of society, many of which are operating in the same time frame and even region. He distinguishes between anthropological views of society, which revolve around subsistence behavior, and sociological views which revolve around the element of socialization.
