America, mostly because it has been banned, but also because it is a favorite work of many teachers. While required reading for some, others find the work compelling. It is
the study of a boy coming of age, on the verge of a breakdown, and provides food for thought. Many find the work inspirational but others see it as disturbing.
In the book, Holden Caulfield, the protagonist, deals with feelings of alienation and confusion. As he explores the adult world of responsibility and sexuality, he retreats into a world of
his own, leaving the reader to contemplate who is crazy, Holden, or the rest of the world. Through the eyes of this confused teenager, one is reminded of the free
nature all children are born with. Caught between a carefree existence and responsibility, Holden finds himself hiding from his friends and family after being expelled from the preparatory school he
had attended. This was perhaps the impetus Holden needed to get close to a major breakthrough in discovering who he really was. But is Holden different, or the same, as
other adolescents? Interestingly, while he is under psychiatric care as he is seemingly on the verge of a major breakdown, many readers identify with his plight. His feelings and experiences
are not all that uncommon for an adolescent. In fact, many teens feel they are alone and while Holden experiences a deep sense of alienation, it is not unlike the
experience of many who are coming of age and feel awkward and alone. Even peers do not seem to be enough to help these young human beings achieve a sense
