He had encountered the intervention of gods and goddesses, and lived many years on an island that many people would imagine to be paradise. But, in the beginning, and in
the end, Ulysses saw home-his palace, his wife, his child-as paradise. In the following paper we examine paradise in Homers Odyssey, examining the island of Calypso, Ogygia, and the palace
of king Alcinous, and discussing how, while they were beautiful and intriguing, they were nothing compared to his paradise, his home. Paradise Many see paradise as a land
that is filled with beautiful plants, trees, and a land that is fertile and peaceful. They envision paradise as seen in the Bible. Others envision paradise as a place of
great wealth and great success. Each individual has their own vision of what paradise would be like. In Homers Odyssey we see many examples of various paradises. We see grand
islands, islands where women are eagerly awaiting men, palaces filled with wealth and beauty, and the humble paradise that is found in love and sacrifice. Bearing all of the
possibilities in mind we must understand that we are talking about paradise to Ulysses, not someone elses paradise. And, in regards to Ulyssses paradise we know that it is his
home, his palace, his wife, his son, his people. Ogygia Ulysses is trapped on Calypsos island for many years. If it werent for his pride, his need to
get home, and his sense of dignity it is likely that Ulysses would have gladly stayed with a nymph, a goddess, who was beautiful and kind and in love with
Ulysses. From a physical standpoint Calypso herself presented a type of paradise to the right man. And, in regards to the surroundings, the island of Ogygia itself, we see a
