It is something of a historical look at the making of life itself, of the battles between angels, and of the creation of man. It is a very detailed and
unique story. Paradise Lost by Milton In first discussing this poem it is perhaps important to note the historical and cultural elements of the poem. As an epic
poem is stands as one of those powerful pieces that follows the traditions of ancient writers such as Homer. It was written in the 17th century. It is also considered
to be a "great Protestant epic poem" which is religiously significant as well as historically and culturally (Johnston). Johnston further illustrates the importance of an epic poem, and this poem,
by stating the following: "Typically epic poems are all-encompassing cultural visions, with a huge scope which explores all aspects of a particular moment of civilization. Such poems explore big questions:
the vision of an entire society, the relationship between human beings and the divine, the essential qualities which establish and perpetuate a certain moral vision of life, the historical framework
and future destiny of a nation, and so on." (Johnston). They are far more than just stories for they ultimately illustrate to
a culture who they are, and they celebrate a culture for "what it is" (Johnston). And, being that Milton was a Protestant, this work was perhaps the first that took
to illustrating ones relationship with God in a Protestant manner. Catholicism was the most powerful, and essentially the only, Christian religion until the Reformation in the 16th century. Protestants were
essentially individuals who stood against Catholicism and also stood for a relationship with God, offering more personal interaction with religion rather than simply relying on the "church" and its rules
