really a restrictive environment that is bound to fail. Or perhaps the environment is so full of possibility that the characters cannot come together and find a true and meaningful
paradise. In essence, these works often illustrate that chaos is part of humanity and that while we need society and rules to keep us safe, those rules also have the
potential to destroy us in the end. Two stories that provide us with such views of paradise are William Goldings "Lord of the Flies" and Margaret Atwoods "Handmaids Tale." The
following paper examines these two different paradises and discusses why they were failures. Paradise and Failure In "Lord of the Flies" we have boys who are stranded on
an island, an apparent paradise where they can live out their lives as they desire if they are never rescued. They are given every opportunity to create the most wondrous
world where they are free and allowed to live with nature without war and hostilities. The problem, however, is that they are young boys/men who are used to being controlled
and ruled by society. They do not have the skills to survive on their own in a peaceful way and are thus unable to create a paradise. In many
ways these boys are reflective of society in that the author is arguing that societies of all kinds need rules to keep them safe and keep them from their own
natural instincts that involve killing and simple survival. They are boys who are not able to live without rules and they illustrate how when the rules are implemented and not
heeded society will crumble to an animalistic level. With "The Handmaids Tale" we have a society that has been strictly and rigidly designed to keep people in their place
