as examples of how the student should approach the issue described. The structure of modern nursing theory is based on the development and view of four specific nursing domains,
commonly described within the paradigms of nursing: person, environment, health and nursing. The larger scope of the profession of nursing encompasses theories and actions that take place relative
to these four central domains. The progression of nursing theories related to these four nursing domains range from holistic approaches by theorists like Watson to practical theories like those
of Rosemarie Parse. Though varied assessments of the paradigms and nursing theories that inform modern nursing knowledge relate a number of perspectives, the pragmatic perspective places value on those theories
that are directly applicable to the four domains described. A pragmatic approach takes into consideration the theoretical elements outlined, but also defines the basis through which theories applied to
the four domains can influence nursing behaviors. The current literature relates a number of explanations of the nature of paradigms and the application of modern theory.
Weaver and Olsen (2006) describe nursing paradigms as sets of beliefs and practices that are shared by a variety of nursing professionals and that inform nursing behaviors (Weaver and
Olsen, 2006). The authors recognized that within the scope of nursing theory, the paradigms can relate to either the practical nursing systems or to nursing research. Within the
scope of nursing theory, the different types of nursing paradigms can be broken down into three groups: ontological, epistemological, and methodological. Many nursing paradigms have become the central directive
