one which is characterized by clear and distinct shifts from one worldview to another. In order to understand Kuhns theory and to relate
it to other areas of life, such as the workplace, we need to look at the way he defines and describes this process of paradigm shift. A paradigm is a
worldview in which there is a specific, established and accepted way of thinking: any new discoveries which are made have to fit within the box of that worldview. Once a
paradigm is established, there is no effort to explore lines of research which lie outside it; if anomalies are noted, they are ignored, or made to fit, or they may
not even be observed in the first place. Research focuses on exploring the paradigm further rather than looking outside it, and on finding more reasons why the paradigm itself is
correct and valid. When we encounter anomalies which cannot be ignored or made to fit the paradigm, these form the basis for
paradigm shift. Pajares (2007) defines such an anomaly as something that "violates the paradigm-induced expectations that govern normal science" (Pajares, 2007). It is an observation or discovery which is new,
which contradicts the paradigm, and which cannot be explained within the terms of the paradigm. This gives rise to further research into the anomaly, and the paradigm is altered so
that it is no longer anomalous; instead, it "becomes the expected" (Pajares, 2007). This change means that the scientist has developed a new worldview which replaces and supersedes the previous
one. However, as Pajares points out, not all new information is sufficient to generate paradigm shift. There will always be some
