The world in which Lauren lives is one of devastation and chaos. Every good thing that would normally lead to happiness and hope is gone. Nothing is easy and people
see only two options. The average person is not going to look for a third option, that of just leaving. Its too dangerous outside the wall so they can either
enslave themselves to the town of Olivar where they will have no freedom over any part of their lives but will have security or to stay in the walled neighborhoods
where they are also imprisoned. Even behind the walls, they are often attacked by thieves and drug addicts who break into the neighborhoods. Lauren knows external authorities are not
going to help the people. She also knows the people in Robledo will only become poorer and poorer because there are no jobs. Her particular psychological make-up sets her apart
from the others and gives her the strength to take charge of her own life. She takes it upon herself to study and learn how to be self-reliant in a
hostile world. She prepares for the day she will leave. She seems to have also learned that even if she survives the journey she plans for herself, she will still
have to be self-reliant when she arrives at a safe place. Religion has not left her with any hope. Her own father is a minister but he does not
help people in terms of hope. Lauren believes that God will help those who help themselves. She does not believe God is just going to intercede and make life better.
