plastic bags when they do their shopping. There are those who argue that paper bags are far better for the environment and others who argue that plastics are actually better
than the natural product that is paper. The following paper presents a persuasive argument in favor of using paper bags over plastic. Paper Bags In all honesty there
are pros and cons to the use of both kinds of bags in society. This is why many are opting for reusable fabric bags for shopping, thus eliminating paper and
plastic altogether. But, in terms of choosing paper or plastic one must clearly understand all that goes into making and discarding paper and plastic bags. In doing so one can
see that there are perhaps benefits to both sides of the argument. It is noted, for example, that, "To make all the bags we use each year, it takes
14 million trees for paper and 12 million barrels of oil for plastic. The production of paper bags creates 70 percent more air pollution than plastic, but plastic bags create
four times the solid waste - enough to fill the Empire State Building two and a half times" (Thompson, 2007). This clearly illustrates that the paper and plastic debate is
a very confusing one for on one hand there are benefits to one and on the other hand there are detriments to one or the other. It is clear
that both sides of the issue have good and bad conditions associated with them This is why choosing one over the other, assuming one does not bring their own bags,
is so difficult. But, there are also elements to both forms of bags that clearly speak of how paper bags are far better overall than are plastic bags. For example,
