the terminally ill is a specialized field of medicine which is slowly emerging in step with certain changes in our society and our mindset. As the members of our
society grows progressively older a larger and larger percentage of the population becomes categorized as elderly. A significant percentage of elderly patients are faced with terminal illness, illness for
which there is no cure and few options in regard to treatment. Palliative care is one of those options. Of
the 2.3 million people who die in the United States on a yearly basis, in excess of eighty percent dies in an institutional setting such as hospitals or nursing homes
(Butler, 1996). Given the statistics it would seem that the topic of death and how to deal with terminal illness would be one which we were comfortable with dealing.
Nothing, however, could be further from the truth. The topic of death is not one which is favored as casual conversation. It is a topic, however, with which
we are confronted on an almost daily basis. From television depictions of the subject to the loss of a close loved one, we become constantly reacquainted with the subject.
The way that we deal with death varies on both an individual and a collective level. Considering the sensitivity of the issue both to the individual who is
dying and to their families and those who are in attendance, it is imperative that we find an equitable and responsible way to deal with death and the needs of
