This paper summarizes the books sections and gives a reaction to it. Discussion The first reaction any reader is likely to have to the book is helpless laughter. Consider Palasts description of boarding a plane in the U.S. since 9/11, where signs in the airport inform him that security is no joking matter: "But if securitys no joking matter, why does this guy in a high-school marching band outfit tell me to take off my shoes? All I can say is, Thank God the shoe bomber didnt carry Semtex in his underpants" (Palast, 2006, p. 9). Once the reader gets up off the floor-especially those who see this whole security rigmarole for the sheer idiocy it is-hes immediately confronted with another fact that illustrates the incredible stupidity of the current administration. Or perhaps its not stupidity, but something else. Like greed. Consider: The U.S. is the only nation in the world to proclaim that today its on "high alert" or "low alert" or "medium alert" as designated by a color code (orange, red, sky-blue pink, whatever); the day Palast is discussing was an "orange alert" day, meaning it was "low threat" (Palast, 2006). According to the Department of Homeland Security, this means that there will be no "special inspections of passengers or cargo" on such days; isnt it nice, Palast says, that Bush alerts Osama "when half our security forces have the day off" (Palast, 2006, p. 9). Palast asked an Israeli security expert why Israel doesnt use color codes, and he responded by asking Palast if he ever bothered with them; Palast said he didnt check ...
