This exhibit provides a lengthy history of the period, with a focus on the religious changes that occurred that influenced the artistry and architecture of this era. This
exhibition includes a number of different artists, including Gentile de Fabriano, Master Francke, Jacques Daliwe, Giovanni de Grassi and Jacquemart de Hesdin. The works of these artists are placed
within a historical and social context through the text of the virtual exhibition. The central purpose of the exhibition, like any good art history textbook, is to place the artistry
of some significant and representative artists into a context that makes their images, their works, show a sense of continuity. The artists that are exhibited in this Web site
are individuals whose works had distinct religious and social significance during this period, and represented elements of the international style, including the courtly and soft elements, which were distinct to
this era. One thing that distinguishes this exhibition is that the contextualization of the works provided is not simply done through a time-line approach, though one section of the
exhibition does outline a time-line. Instead, this site gives the viewer a context for the artists and their artistry that is religious, social, political and stylistic as well.
As a result, the viewer is able to understand the progression of the art being influenced by different variables. For example, the exhibition outlines the political changes after the
death of King Charles IV, the social changes that occurred upon the introduction of the reign of Emperor Wencelas, and the religious significance of the Papal court at Avignon.
