powerful paintings that depict historical or mythical or religious icons and paintings that demand the viewers attention in many respects. Three of the most famous, and most intricately powerful, paintings
are Michelangelos Sistine Chapel, Baldassarre Peruzzis ceiling paintings in the Loggia of Galatea, and Pietro de Cortonas Triumph of Divine Providence. The following paper examines each of the paintings separately
and then compares and contrasts the three in relationship to illusionism, iconography, relationship to spectator, function and style. Sistine Chapel Michelangelos
ceiling painting in the Sistine Chapel is likely the most famous of all ceiling works in the history of art. Even people who know nothing about art have at least
heard of the Sistine Chapel and know that it was Michelangelo who painted this work. One author notes that, "As a work of art, the Sistine Chapel is unparalleled; it
is said that one can have no idea of what one man can achieve in his life until one has seen it" (Science and Religion, 2007). In relationship to its
presentation of illusionism the structure of the painting is fairly geometrical and does not necessarily offer a powerful sense of illusion from down below. There is depth but the segments
are so clearly defined that there is a lack of true illusionism that one would see in a painting that encompasses many overlapping elements and perceptions of depth.
In this painting there are definite segments or sections. There are the four outlying corners which are paintings done in triangles. They are called
Pendentives and are described as follows: "The large spandrels placed in the corners of the ceiling narrate four episodes of the miraculous salvation of the people of Israel. These should
