Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 10 page paper discussing putting research into nursing practice. There is much research done in the name of furthering practice technique and nursing values. Not all research is of the quality it should be, but even that which is still is difficult to incorporate into practice in many instances. Increasing projects in nursing research are using a qualitative approach, one that typically has been looked askance on by the medical community as not being "real" science because it relies on opinions and attitudes of research subjects rather than on physically measurable (i.e., quantitative) quantities and structures. This paper reviews a well done qualitative work, then applies its findings to pain management in nursing practice. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

the medical community grudgingly admits that qualitative research not only can be valid, but that it is the only means possible of researching some topics. Increasing use of qualitative
approaches holds direct implication for nursing practice. The Value of Current Research Qualitative research has
moved into nursing research rather recently and in many cases has not yet been specifically defined. Many of those so highly trained in and accustomed to quantitative methods retain
a lingering distrust of the qualitative approach, one that often has not been done well and has resulted in works that cannot be considered "real" science.
The hard truth is that there has been much poorly designed work that can hardly be described as being research done under the qualitative banner simply because
it was invalid at the outset and would not conform for any reason to the quantitative framework. This article by Dorothy Woods Smith
