when there were Spanish settlers, something that comes as no surprise to readers today. Within the context of this work, the author delves through various issues in history such as
the religious nature of the city, the fact that it was a railroad town and how the role of gambling would sometimes take center stage. Other things come to the
forefront such as the fact that Las Vegas once saw a great deal of trading and gold mining. Vegas of course is in the west and it would see people
going cross country in search for gold and wealth. Some of the information will come as no surprise, but people are simply not used to viewing a picture of Las
Vegas in this light. Rather, they see it as a lit up city with gambling resorts, entertainment and things of that nature. Few view it as anything else. In some
ways this authors book is important because he provides the backdrop to Vegas, something that many people have never contemplated. Much of the book does focus on the early years
but it takes the reader right up through the tumultuous sixties. The book provides a semblance of what daily life was like at the beginnings of this citys origin. Of
course, the book only provides general information and there is only a set amount that can be included. This is not a very large volume. Further, it seemingly lacks a
thesis which is fine for a historical text. The author highlights specific points in respect to the history of this city. For example, Paher explains that during the later years,
Las Vegas would emerge as a gambling town. Of course, this is something obvious because that is what it is today. However, attention to the origins of that phenomenon is
